Weather news…

What a contrast- I watch the ice and cold on FoxNews in the Mid-West and am experiencing a threatening tropical storm at the same time! Let’s pray for all those affected by the folks in the mid-West. I can’t imagine being without powe/heat in such cold weather. When we are without power here, it is the fans we miss but it isn’t life threatening!

Here is the news on our developing weather here. My region is under red alert for the next 24 hours. Let’s pray we can get this past us without any more damage!  (PS… My personal “storm” hasn’t passed me by yet so I will have to go see the lab folks tomorrow and then see the doctor so we can kill this mean, nasty bug!)

SPECIAL TROPICAL DISTURBANCE STATEMENT
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
500 PM EST MON DEC 10 2007

SATELLITE IMAGES AND SURFACE REPORTS INDICATE THAT THE BROAD AREA OF
LOW PRESSURE IS NOW CENTERED JUST EAST OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS AND
ABOUT 130 MILES EAST OF SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO.  THIS SYSTEM HAS
BECOME A LITTLE BETTER ORGANIZED THIS AFTERNOON.  HOWEVER…THE
MOST WIDESPREAD THUNDERSTORMS REMAIN A COUPLE HUNDRED MILES NORTH
AND NORTHEAST OF THE CENTER.  WHILE A TROPICAL OR SUBTROPICAL
CYCLONE COULD FORM AT ANY TIME DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS…
UPPER-LEVEL WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BECOME GRADUALLY LESS FAVORABLE
FOR DEVELOPMENT OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.  REGARDLESS OF
WHETHER THE LOW DEVELOPS FURTHER…IT COULD PRODUCE HEAVY SQUALLS
AND GUSTY WINDS OF NEAR GALE FORCE ACROSS THE VIRGIN ISLANDS…
PUERTO RICO…AND HISPANIOLA TONIGHT AND TUESDAY AS IT MOVES
WESTWARD OR WEST-SOUTHWESTWARD AT 15 TO 20 MPH.  HEAVY RAINS OVER
PUERTO RICO AND HISPANIOLA COULD CAUSE LIFE-THREATENING FLASH
FLOODS AND MUD SLIDES…AND INTERESTS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD
CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM.

Tropical Storm Noel

I know many of you are wondering… it has been a tough day for our folks. Here in Santiago we are dealing with the winds and rising rivers. Sol just called and one of our families in Los Santos lost a good part of their house and while Sol doesn’t think it is safe, they are staying in the their home tonight. Please keep them in your prayers. Tomorrow Victor will be doing some assessment and we will see what help we can provide for folks to recover. The worst damage was in other parts of the country. Please keep the DR in your prayers- it is a chilly, wet (still raining) windy night.

Read on from the AP News…

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) - Tropical Storm Noel lashed the Dominican Republic with heavy rains on Monday, causing flooding and mudslides that killed at least 20 people and left another 20 missing, officials said.

Noel was expected to dump up to 20 inches of rain on the Dominican Republic and Haiti, which share the island of Hispaniola, as it heads northwest toward the Bahamas.

The storm was expected to veer away from the United States, but forecasters said a tropical storm watch, which means that tropical storm conditions are possible within 36 hours, may be issued for southeast Florida later Monday.

The spinning tropical storm had been forecast to hit Haiti hardest but veered toward the Dominican Republic, apparently catching residents offguard.

“We didn’t know that it was going to be like this, it took us by surprise,” said Guarionex Rosado as he left his home in La Cienaga, one of Santo Domingo’s most affected neighborhoods.

Noel temporarily knocked out the Dominican Republic’s entire power system early Monday, plunging 9.4 million people into the dark for about two hours, said Radhames Segura, vice president of the state-owned electric company.

Some buildings tumbled down hillsides near the Dominican capital and a cell phone tower slammed to the ground in the southwestern province of Barahona. At least 10 people went missing when the Maimon River overflowed its banks and a sent a torrent of muddy water rushing through the town of Piedra Blanca.

Manuel Antonio Luna Paulino, president of the Dominican Republic’s National Emergency Commission, said at least 20 people had died and another 20 were reported missing.

Three of those killed died when they were swept up by a fast-moving river in San Jose de Ocoa, southwest of the capital. Three more - a couple and their child - were killed in a mudslide in the port city of Haina, officials said.

International aid workers believe the death toll is certain to rise as reports come in from remote areas of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

“I think this has taken some officials by surprise. The storm was predicted to go more toward Haiti,” said Holly Inuretta, a regional adviser for U.S.-based Catholic Relief Services.

Haitian Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis said there were no immediate reports of casualties in his country, but he urged people to seek shelter.

“It’s very serious now,” Alexis said at a news conference in the presidential palace. “It’s moving very slowly and dropping a lot of rain.”

Haiti is prone to deadly flooding because of its steep mountains and hills deforested by people who cut down the trees to make charcoal. Floods earlier this month killed at least 37 and sent more than 4,000 people to shelters.

At 8 p.m. EDT, Noel’s center was about 205 miles south-southeast of Great Exuma Island in the central Bahamas, forecasters said. It was heading northwest at roughly 14 mph.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect for the northern peninsula of Haiti, central and southeastern islands in the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and a portion of central and southeastern Cuba, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

The storm’s center was expected to move between the northern coast of Cuba and the central Bahamas late Monday and Tuesday.

Prayer Concerns…

I appreciate all the prayers for my mom. She is doing well- the tubes are coming out one by one. I think she will come home by Friday, if not tomorrow.

Please remember my sister-in-law, Christina, and her family. Her father (Paul Gallier) was officially pronounced last night at 12:04. It has been a very difficult time for all of them. It is hard to lose a loved one, especially so suddenly.  They will have a celebration of life on Saturday morning at First Baptist Church, Sudbury, MA (the church I grew up in).  Paul was a faithful servant of the Lord right to the end. In the past hours I have thought how impressive it is that he was an active leader in the church all his life, finishing strong.

Another update…

It is a beautiful Labor Day here in New England- a warm 85 degrees and the sun feels wonderful.  Most of my weekend has been spent either in the hospital or driving to and from.  My mom is doing fairly well- she hasn’t felt very good the last two days but that is sort of to be expected.  I think she is improving which is a good thing.

Another emergency prayer request… my sister-in-law’s father (and a family friend) had an accident while riding his bike. He had to be air-lifted to the UMass hospital in Worcester. I’m not sure of his condition, other than he needs our prayers. Please remember him (Paul Gallier) and his family.

Surgery Update

So far so good… My mom came through the surgery with flying colors.  The doctor said her colon was extremely irritated and inflamed, and he estimated she must have had over 30 attacks of diverticulitis. So the surgery will be well worth it  (He said she would have never gotten better without the surgery so she made the right choice.)  She says her tummy hurts but that is to be expected. She should go home next Tuesday or Wednesday if all goes well.  Thanks to everyone for their prayers.

Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend…

Special prayer concern…

Just a reminder: my mom will be operated on tomorrow. We won’t know the time until a little later this morning. I will try to update later with the time. She is doing very well- her workouts at the gym have helped her regain some of the strength she lost this summer during her various hospitalizations.  We have been on the go constantly since I got home last week which has been good- keeping her mind off the surgery. But now the big day is almost here. And unfortunately, she will be alone most of today (remember I am on my way to NYC to see the Yankees vs. Red Sox :).

So, please keep my mom and dad in your prayers today and tomorrow as they get ready for the surgery. My brother and I will meet them at the hospital tomorrow.

Also, my nephew David is on his way this morning to Ft. Benning, GA to report for duty. We are proud of him- he was commissioned as a 2nd LT. this summer.  Please join us in praying for safe travel.

She is going home!

Believe it or not, the doctors say Mecho is doing very well and able to go home today! I imagine she will be glad to get home and it will be a relief for her family. Pray for her to continue to gain her strength and make a full recovery.

I have spent the last two days in bed with a terrible cold/bug. It is no fun! I am hoping tomorrow I can get up and moving because I have way too much to do!

Please continue to pray for the medical team coming Saturday- I am hopeful that their contact with several of our profressional friends who will be working with us will sense God’s presence in their lives and be led to make a commitment to serve the Living Lord.

9 hours later…

Mecho went in at 8am and around 5pm they were sewing her up! All I know is that things went well, she is stable. She will be in ICU for at least two days. I hope I can make a quick visit in the morning to see her. She was very calm and had a smile on her face this morning. I know she would want me to give thanks to all of you for keeping her in your prayers! (Not to mention your generous giving that made this surgery possible!) I will keep you updated as I know more.

Surgery Date

We now have Mecho’s surgery date: May 26th. I had hoped for earlier that week but we are thankful for what we have. Please continue to pray for her. She has good days and bad days. It is increasingly more evident that she really does need this surgery.  Pray for her peace of mind as well as for her family and friends. We will meet with the surgeon this week for her last evaluation which should bring some additional relief.

Mecho update

I have been talking to the folks at the Heart Foundation- we are going ahead on faith to have her operated on at the private clinic. Even though it costs more, it is the better option.  Following the surgery, she will have her doctors there and not waiting on them to show up at the hospital, seeing someone different everyday, not to mention the hygiene issues associated with the hospital.

Tomorrow we should have an exact date for the surgery. It will probably be the week of May 21-25th. They have a special project of children’s surgery this coming week (14-18) and there is a chance they can fit her in then. If not, it will be the following week. I hope it will be soon. Waiting is so hard for me, and I can only imagine how Mecho feels!  Thanks for keeping her in your prayers.
